The Logo of the Church of Scotland Guild

The Guild was founded in 1887 by Rev Dr Archibald Charteris as the Church of Scotland Women’s Guild.  Charteris’ aim was for “a movement of all the willing women workers in a parish, old and young, rich and poor, for mutual help and united action”. Within years there were 29,000 members in 400 branches.  Membership reached a peak of over 160,000 in the 1950’s.

In 1997, membership was opened to men and the name was changed to the Church of Scotland Guild.  Membership is open to all who support the Guild’s aim:

“The Church of Scotland Guild is a movement within the Church of Scotland which invites and encourages both women and men to commit their lives to Jesus Christ and enables them to express their faith in worship, prayer and action.”

Today the Church of Scotland Guild is one of Scotland’s largest voluntary organisations with around 30,000 members.

Annual themes encourage guilds to plan their programmes more effectively.  The theme for 2021/22 is Lights & Bushels… the program is shown below.

Burnhead Parish Church Guild meet every Tuesday afternoon between 1pm and 3pm in the Church Extension and is open to all to attend.
